Walking through the park, it hit me… The oddest feeling that something—and I wasn’t sure what—but it was something, and it was coming.
My thoughts, full and vivid, I wasn’t paying much attention to anything—I rarely did. So, walking with Ashlyn, my best friend—almost sister,— I felt perfectly at ease. Straight minded Ashlyn always kept everything under control. As far as I can recall.
“Ivy,” her voice hissed, cutting through the haze in my mind, pulling me back to the current.
“Yes…?” I asked, my voice slightly slurred with the lazy relaxation that was, undoubtedly a part of me. Looking up, I studied her golden tanned face. Her sharply beautiful features were arranged in worry. Instantly, I straightend to my full height— only barely tall enough for the tip of my head to reach her shoulder. At six foot even, Ashlyn towered over me.
“Where are we?” she demanded, her voice dark. “I don’t remember this, any of it.” Her tone had me glancing around myself. What I saw made me want to gasp. No longer were we in the crowded and loud city of New York that was home, but rather a woods, so deep and thick I couldn’t see the ground ten feet ahead if I had tried.
“How long have we been walking? And to where?” I demanded, staring into Ashlyn’s large dark fire cobalt blue eyes. They were filled with worry and uncertainty. My pulse picked up a bit. Ashlyn didn’t worry. And she hardly seemed uncertain. Her eyes scanned the area around us quickly. Turning just a bit, she finished the survey. “Can you hear anything,” she demanded, voice strong.
Ashlyn and I stilled, to the point of a statue and listened for any sign of civilization. We heard nothing, not even the chirping of birds. My heart beat kicked up, as if to fill the silence. Calm down, I told myself. It was happening for a reason. Everything happened for a reason, and this was no different. I wouldn’t let it be.
Ashlyn, her voice strong with only a hint of panic, turned around again, seeming certain that if she continued to look around long enough that the path would magically appear. “I can’t believe this… Where is the path! Things don’t just dissapear like that!”
“Well, then what happened?”
“I don’t know!” She hissed, glaring eyes fixed on me. Had the situation been different, I would have glared back, my temper flaring as brightly as hers. But I knew it would do nothing, positively nothing, to help our situation. So, taking a deep breath, I began walking.
“Where are you going!?” She hissed from behind me.
I kept walking as I spoke, “Standing around like a moron won’t help out. I’m lookin’ for a way to get the hell out of here,” stuffing my hands in my pockets, I began to whistle. “Got any cell service out here? I left mine at home. My mother’s going to kill me.” And picked up the tuneless bliss of air humming out from my lips.
“My cell!” Ashlyn crowed, reaching frantically into her purse. After flipping open the tiny devices top flap, the elated look left her face. “No service. Is that really so surprising? We’re very thick woods in the middle of nowhere.” Her tone was bitter and cold.
I threw her a look over my shoulder. And had the strange urge to laugh at her clothing choice. She was wearing black from head to toe… But this was normal. She always did. I wish she’d wear some pink. It fits her better. Ashlyn was always amazingly beautiful. But then, that’s only with the outside interior. On the inside, alot was black for her.
Despite that, I’m so often jealous of her.
“Well,” I sighed, “we might as well start looking around. We’ll find our way out eventually. This forest can’t go on forever, right?”
“This is the last time I take a shortcut home,” Ashlyn muttered, running her slim shapely fingers through her long honey golden hair.
“Aw, c’mon… We just weren’t payin’ attention, that’s all. Nothin’ more.”
“No. I will not ever get lost again just because your too lazy to walk the whole way.”
“Sorry. You know I zone out… I thought you were watching where we were going.” I pulled down a branch and let her walk through first.
“Thank you… And I was paying attention. Which is what I don’t get. I had never zoned or anything. I just blinked, and we were in here, surrounded by trees. And I don’t know how it happened. Like some sort of magic. I know you’re thinking I’m crazy. But I’m not. I swear that’s waht happened.”
I didn’t say a word.
“Okay… how late is it? How long have we been walking?” I didn’t finish my question before Ashlyn had her wrist held up, squinting to try and read the numbers. It was nearly black around us now. The only light was the faint traces of the moon fighting it’s way through the branches of the evergreens, making Ashlyn’s tan, golden skin glow.
“It’s two. Let’s rest… If we come out of here now, we won’t be in any less trouble if we show up at a reasonable hour.”
